iTunes for Windows Makes Alpha

Software Ever since Apple's release of the iPod for Windows, there has been speculation suggesting that Apple might port its popular iTunes application to the Windows platform. Rumors again began to circulate, and were eventually confirmed, when Apple released the iTunes Music Store for Macintosh users. Market analysts predict Apple could dramatically increase profits by marketing the music store to Windows users. Well, you don't have to tell Apple twice: iTunes for Windows is already in its alpha stage.

By Brian in Articles at Tue Jun 17th, 2003 at 01:53:07 AM PST

Artificial Cheese was able to obtain a copy of this alpha software for internal testing. Because of its infant state, the software lacks many features currently available on the Macintosh version. In fact, our copy can be likened to a proof of concept more than anything else. However, this is not to say that nothing works. In addition to supporting song controls (volume, skip, etc.), the software boasts the same look and feel as the original iTunes (complete with a drag & drop interface and integrated search bar). Features absent from this build are visualization effects, iPod connectivity, and access to the music store. But like we said earlier, this is alpha software. Nobody said it was finished.

Screenshots are available.

If you look at the playlist, it appears the information goes beyond "genre" (as it should, and does in the Mac version), yet there's no horizontal scroll-bar to actually show that information. Also, there's a color mismatch around the corners of the song information/title display.

I mean really, Photoshop is still showing in the dock . . . oops, I mean taskbar. Speaking of the taskbar, where is the icon for Winamp which is clearly running. So fake.

winamp icon is in the taskbar, bottom right. not that i think this is actual screen shots, but what i found rather funny was that your on a pc, your running ie in the background, and your site doesn't even show up correctly on your own platform, and you show this to the world in a screenshot... what's up with that ? :) heh.

Firstly, I want to say I'd never post something I knew was crap just to get hits. That's not the way I want to run a site, and I think it's rude to make such an accusation. Secondly, I want to say that although there is reason to question the validity of this program, there is no reason to question the validity of the screenshots. They're real. I honestly have iTunes.exe sitting on my hard drive. I think a lot of your nay-saying can be answered by looking at a screenshot a friend took of the same program. If you would like me to post more screenshots of the program in different situations, I'd be happy to do so. I'm not just pulling these shots out of my ass.

I question the validity of this program based not on what it looks like, but how it functions. Honestly, it's not very great (something which should have been apparent to anyone who read what I originally wrote). I think anybody at Apple could have written something a lot better in only a few days. This doesn't automatically invalidate the program, but it helps a great deal. On the other hand, it could just be a very, very, very early alpha. It's impossible to tell.

My purpose for posting these screenshots was not to prove any serious development on the part of Apple. It was merely to show that development is in fact underway. I think a lot of people need to calm down and be a little more respectful. Wow. I sound just like my 3rd grade teacher. Anyway...

To all the haters out there: the existence and genuine nature of this application has been questioned at Apple Insider. I was able to send the app to one of their admins, and they confirmed that iTunes.exe is indeed an executable file. They've posted more screenshots, and will make a video soon.

Honestly, if I wanted to photoshop an image, I'd do a much better job. Now can we move on to discuss the actual implications of this app, and not merely verbally abuse me?

iTunes.exe Meets Hex Editor (none / 0) (#23)

The Artificial Cheese staff took a hex editor to iTunes.exe in an effort to dig deeper into this mystery. It appears that the application was either written in .NET, or written in another language and compiled into .NET. How do we know? We don't, but here's some readable output we found:

kernel32.dll GetProcAddress GetModuleHandleA LoadLibraryA l \ ! ! ! ! ! ! %! ! 2! ! >! ! H! ! S! ! `! ! j! ! w! ! ! " !
" š! " ! " user32.dll advapi32.dll oleaut32.dll advapi32.dll version.dll gdi32.dll user32.dll oleaut32.dll ole32.dll comctl32.dll imm32.dll shell32.dll comdlg32.dll winmm.dll bass.dll %" 7" J" Z" m" ~" " " " " " " # # %# GetKeyboardType RegQueryValueExA SysFreeString RegQueryValueExW VerQueryValueA UnrealizeObject CreateWindowExA SafeArrayPtrOfIndex CoTaskMemAlloc ImageList_SetIconSize ImmGetVirtualKey DragQueryPoint GetOpenFileNameA PlaySoundA BASS_ChannelGetPosition <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>

<assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0">
<assemblyIdentity

<dependency>

version="6.0.0.0"
publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df"
language="*"
processorArchitecture="*"/>
</dependentAssembly>
</dependency>
</assembly>

Any programmers familiar with .NET are welcome to bring their own interpretations. The only other readable section of the app is:

.kernel32.dll.ExitProcess.user32 .dll.MessageBoxA.wsprintfA.LOADER ERROR.The procedure entry point %s could not be located in the dynamic link library %s.The ordinal %u could not be located in the dynamic link library %s.

Looks pretty elaborate for a hoax. Then again, I haven't gotten the magic letter from Apple Legal yet.... (crossing fingers)

The rabbit hole goes deeper... (none / 0) (#25)

(User Info) brian@artificialcheese.com">brian@artificialcheese.com http://www.artificialcheese.com

So looking back at my last post...iTunes.exe is a Delphi Application. Meaning it was compiled with a Delphi compiler (which offers a .NET framework). Why is this significant? Because Quicktime for Windows isn't compiled with Delphi. A quick look at Quicktime reveals many references to .cpp files, making us believe it was compiled with Microsoft Visual C++.

So does this mean it's a hoax? No. Apple isn't required to stick with one language or one compiler. But it's something to consider.

Looking at iTunes' support file, bass.dll, we found something else:

mixerOpen acmStreamSize ExitProcess LoadLibraryA GetProcAddress VirtualProtect GlobalAlloc GlobalFree MessageBoxA wsprintfA CoInitialize rand WINMM.dll MSACM32.dll KERNEL32.dll USER32.dll ole32.dll MSVCRT.dll

See "WINMM.dll"? That's part of Microsoft's MCI API. What's the MCI API do? Among other things, it plays audio and video files. This means, if this app is real, Apple is planning on just using Microsoft's shared libraries to do the dirty work. A rush job to meet market demand? Maybe so.

And finally, to further counter the nay-sayers (or as I will say from now on, "Negative Nancy and pals"), here's another screenshot. Additionally, Apple Insider is going to be picking up this story soon (tomorrow). They have a copy of the exe, have tested it, and can confirm it's at least a real application.

Where is the menu bar? (none / 0) (#26)
Posted by Anonymous on Wed Jun 18th, 2003 at 06:38:52 AM PST

First of all: I want iTunes for Windows to be here by yesterday. Many of my Windows-based colleagues bought or are considering to buy an iPod, and, although I rather would like them to buy a Mac, at least they should feel the magic of Apple software. Not to forget about Windows users that might buy some stuff at the Apple Music Store. My suspicion why this iTunes is fake, or possibly just a skin on a Windows prgram, is the fact that just an iTunes window doesn't give you complete control over iTunes' functions; you need a menu bar for that. (Preferences, File Open, etc.) Where is it? In the old days, QuickTime Player used to have a floating menu bar on the Windows platform, which looked a bit silly. In the current versions of Quicktime/Windows, the menu bar is on the main window, which is a standard Windows approach. So, what does this mean: a) It's fake b) It's a very early alpha build. That doesn't add anything to any discussion, because it's a known fact that Apple is develoing iTunes for Windows. Move on, nothing to see here

Someone mentioned Aqua-Soft as a possible creator of the app, and the lead panned out. To anyone who has been reading my reports on Artificial Cheese investigations, this comes as no surprise. To everyone who has emailed me asking for a copy of this software, click on the link above and download it for yourself.

I would like to thank everyone who has stood up for my staff and me. And to my critics, I'd like to again say that nothing on this page was meant to mislead you in any way. I think that if you actually read what I wrote, you'll find that skepticism towards the validity of the app being a real Apple leak has been present since the very beginning. And seriously, the bad names and crude accusations are unnecessary. Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?
