Apple's SPEC scores misleading?

Hardware Haxial's spl isn't the only one questioning Apple's published performance SPEC tests. Reader Mark Duell recently submitted his own independent criticisms of Apple's claims. From his article: I was watching the keynote last night, and I was amazed by the SPEC scores presented. So amazed in fact, that I had to go to spec.org to see if they were real. While I won't call Apple's numbers fraudulent outright, they had a number of curious details.
Brian's note: Read my comment(s) on this story before you get mad. An Apple VP has posted a rebuttal, plus I have some rebuttal of my own.

Apple Slipup Spoils Steve's Surprise

Hardware

Someone is getting fired come tomorrow. Why, you ask? Perhaps because the Apple Store was updated 3 days too early. The mistake was noticed late Friday night when users who visited the specs page for the PowerMac G4 received a misplaced image. Instead of seeing this, users instead saw a different image listing specs for Apple's soon-to-be-released PowerMac G5 (see attached screenshots).

iTunes for Windows Makes Alpha

Software Ever since Apple's release of the iPod for Windows, there has been speculation suggesting that Apple might port its popular iTunes application to the Windows platform. Rumors again began to circulate, and were eventually confirmed, when Apple released the iTunes Music Store for Macintosh users. Market analysts predict Apple could dramatically increase profits by marketing the music store to Windows users. Well, you don't have to tell Apple twice: iTunes for Windows is already in its alpha stage.

Saddam As You've Never Seen Him Before!

News

Apparently weapons of mass destruction weren't the only think Saddam was hiding. Yahoo! news is reporting that Saddam, during his younger years, was involved in the production of a gay pornographic film. Quoth the article: "...to anyone familiar with how reckless and sexually promiscuous Saddam was in his youth, this will come as no surprise. It's also a known fact that the young, desperate soldier did anything for money."

Kinda makes you wonder what he's up to in his secret hideaway...

Apple bid to buy Universal false

Apple

Earlier this week it was reported by the L.A. Times (free reg. required) and others that Apple had put in a bid to buy Universal Music. This rumor, as exciting as it sounded, looks to be false.

As much fun as it would have been buying CDs from Apple, I'm a little relieved the company won't be stretching itself too thin with an endeavor of this size.

Al Gore is now in office...

News In what first struck the Artificial Cheese team as a hoax, Apple announced today that they are filling recently departed board member Larry Ellison's seat with, you guessed it, Al Gore. I wonder if this commercial affected their decision.

QuickTime 6.1

Software

Check your Software Update panel! Another present from Apple. Makes you kinda wish there was a MacWorld Expo every week! We'd have MacOS XVII in a matter of months!

Update timing makes you wonder if they had this done on Tuesday, but postponed until today for bandwidth reasons.
